The first man and woman create the first brothers. Cain, a farmer, and Abel, a shepherd, both offered their gifts to the Lord. Abel offered his first born sheep and Cain the fruit of his crop. God, however favored Abel and his gift leaving Cain with the feeling of disappointment. The Lord spoke to Cain asking why he doubted himself only making Cain fight with his brother and kill him. When the Lord asked Cain what happened to Abel, he lied saying he is not the one who keeps track of his brother. The Lord then cursed Cain and his crops, never letting him have a successful crop yield again. Cain said then let someone slay me, for I can not live. The Lord then said that if someone tried to hurt him, then the committer will feel the vengeance sevenfold. Then a bunch of children sprout filling the world.
I am conflicted about feeling the wrath of a sibling because I have none. While I listen to the stories of how annoying or how rude or how the sibling stole a shirt or how they just won't go away, I am thankful that I don't have that experience. On the other hand, I haven't had the humbling experience of splitting everything or competing for the attention. I have great friends, a few of which are in this class, who are like siblings to me. We share stories and interests and trifles and opinions. We share love and support and also sadness and hopelessness. Being an only child, has its ups and downs, but never would I be so driven by jealously that I would even think of hurting them. Every friendship is special to me creating a lasting bond that replaces the blood ties that I don't have.
