Garden of Eden

In the first three chapters of Genesis, the creation of the Christian world occurred. According to the bible, God took six days to create, change, and populate the earth. On the seventh, he rested and this would be the sabbath. Throughout this section, after each thing that God creates, he states that “it is good”. In the second section, the origins of man specifically are discussed. Contradicting the first section slightly, the bible states that god created man first of the dust then created all of the animals around him for him to name. Also, from man, God made woman. In the garden, Adam and Eve did not have to think, yet could eat and be nourished by every tree except for that of knowledge. After the serpent convinces them to eat from it, They begin to think, realize that they are naked, and attempt to clothe themselves, changing them from what God had created. Because of this thought, God punished Adam and Eve severely by banning them from Eden.

The most important portion of this section is the caution against free thought. According to this excerpt, after God created people, they followed God without question, yet did not have to worry about finding food or their well-being. After Adam and Eve eat from the tree, they begin to think, and try to clothe and change themselves from God's image. God finds out, and by punishing them shows that thinking can have serious consequences. The way I was brought up values free thought heavily. While it is understandable that god would want undisputed worship, the suppression of thought for me is not a positive idea. This is my least favorite part of The Bible, as it states that man's gift to think freely is the root of sins.
