This story is really about revenge. Before Pandora was made, Prometheus decided to play a trick on Zeus at a festival where men were to sacrifice their first bull. Prometheus split the bull in two and filled one part with good meat and the other part with bones and fat and made Zeus choose one part. He chose what looked like the bigger part of the bull, but when he realized the deception he took away man's fire. Prometheus stole a torch of fire back for man. Zeus became enraged and decided to take revenge. He had a woman made named Pandora. He gave her to Epimetheus, Prometheus' brother. He gave Pandora a box which he instructed her not to open, hoping instead that Epimetheus or Prometheus would take the bait and open it themselves. However, Prometheus warned Epimetheus from accepting gifts from Zeus so he did not open the box. Instead, Pandora's curiosity grew as time passed by and she decided to peek into the box. Every bad thing poured out of the box before she could close it: despair, disease, old age, hatred, greed, violence, etc. When she did close it only hope was left.
I think the one evil I would love to get rid of is lying. My first reason is that as a firm Bible believer this whole conundrum started with a lie - the Devil lying to Eve. Another reason is that I can't trust anybody because I never know if they're lying to me or not, and being lied to is sort of a phobia for me. It scares me to think of what a "friend" may really think of me. I also despise any sort of cheating or manipulation. Unless you're protecting a loved one from serious harm by withholding information of their location or identity then there's no reason to lie.
