Echo and Narcissus

In this lovely mythological epic, we are given yet another reason for why some things are the way they are. In this case, we're talking about nymphs Echo and Narcissus, a girl doomed by echoes and a man showcasing narcissism. When comes to Echo, her fate arrived when she helped Zeus cheat on his wife Hera with her talkativeness, causing Hera to become upset and curse Echo to only repeat the last things said to her, meaning that she can't ever start a conversation.
Meanwhile, Echo has fallen in love with Narcissus, who isn't giving her the time of day (he had a tendency to play anybody who had fallen for him, stringing them along then breaking their hearts) after she desperately tries talking to him. One day, Narcissus goes to a clear spring for a nice drink but then looks down and sees himself; and he is infatuated with what he is seeing. After a while, he realizes that what he is seeing is himself, and is tormented by the notion that he cannot have the object of his desire. Both Echo and Narcissus wither away into nothing but actual echoes and a narcissus flower.
I honestly don't know of any truly narcissistic people that I abhor, but an altruistic person that I admire would definitely be my best friend, as they are seriously the nicest, most caring, and most gentle person that I know, although his stature might sometimes prove otherwise.
