Echo and Narcissus

Echo, like every other nymph in Greek mythology, messed with the wrong gal- in this case, Hera- and ended up with a curse on her back. Echo’s curse was that she was only able to repeat others’ last words. After falling in love with Narcissus, Echo becomes frustrated with his lack of interest in her and prays to Aphrodite to fix her problem. She was then dissolved into a disembodied voice that is heard by everyone. Meanwhile, Narcissus sat by a pond and fell in love with his reflection.

The most altruistic and narcissistic people I know were, surprisingly, both in the same graduation class; it was a class of radicalism… My best friend embodied nearly every trait I hope to be. Her primary mission in life is to be a kind and loving force in the world. Though some people claim she is perfect, I know otherwise. I know she struggles with challenges that everyone faces each day. She is not a wonderful person because she is perfect. Rather, she is wonderful person because she is imperfect, but she strives to be a slightly better human with each day. On the other hand, the most narcissistic person I know may, perhaps, be in love with himself. With the encouragement of his proud parents, he pads his ego with a myriad of accomplishments that would be impressive for most people. But for some reason, I don’t feel the same admiration for a person who celebrates their own accomplishments with such vigor.
