Trevor's Sestina: One World Cup

There were two main things I was considering revising regarding the Sestina I made about the World Cup. The biggest thing I needed to fix was my ending tercet. As indicated by my opening stanza, the end word "one" is used four times. However, I had originally used it only three times in the tercet. Once I fixed that, I considered possibly changing a few of the ending "one"s to different words, but decided against it because I was able to develop a few witty turns of phrase with the score lines and the word "won" that its repetition was too good to pass up.  My revised sestina is below.

One World Cup
By Trevor Kennedy

For the experience that most captivates our world, there can be only one
A tournament where 32 teams come together as one
6 qualification zones follow the road of one
All vying for the prize that can belong only to one
In 2014, Brazil will host the World
A world that has the unifying dream of someday raising the Cup

Spain enter the tournament as defending champions of the Cup
Their Group B Rivals the Netherlands, lost to Spain in the 2010 Final 0-1
In this Group, Chile seem poised to shock the World
These 3 nations will fight in the group to be numbers 2 and 1
The top two places keep the dream alive for fans of which soccer and life are one
But Australia, the underdogs, still keep faith that this year they might be the one

In this tournament, the phrases Group of Death and Group G are basically one
They say you have to beat the best to win this elusive Cup
However, favorites Germany nearly did so in the last one
For Portugal, this could be their year to be number one
Although Ghana said the same thing before they were the one,
Robbed by Suarez’s evil hand in front of the whole world.

That could very well be the toughest group in the World
But aren’t I forgetting some one?
Oh yes, the United States, the unfortunate side when Ghana one.
But 4 years has instilled a new confidence in Americans going into the Cup
Many people, including myself, believe Jurgen Klinnsman is the Special One
To top it all of, in qualifying, we proved that we were North America’s Number 1

And then we have France, the confusing one
They had a great run in 2006, losing to Italy, the champions of the world
And in 2010 and in a weak group, they were predicted to be number one
But they blew it and couldn’t win a single game, not even one
And with it, their chance at claiming another Cup
With another shot at the trophy in Brazil 2014, perhaps they won’t blow this one

Lastly, we have the world’s new laughing stock. England! That’s the one!
In 2010, they scored early vs the USA, then their sorry keeper handed back one
Meanwhile, their own players and coaches self-destructed in their run for the Cup
And finally, they were humiliated by Germany in front of the whole world,
By a disastrous score of 4-1
Maybe 2014 has a pleasant memory in store instead of a haunting one.

All one can know is that Brazil 2014 will be one full of moments
For every good one, there will be one just as bad

But be sure, this will be a special World Cup
