March Madness Sestina

I’ve learned several things about March Madness brackets,

Like never picking Pitt to reach a Final Four,

Or always picking number ones to reach the Sweet Sixteen.

You can scribble through those play-in games,

They’ll never pull off that upset.

But make sure that EKU or American escape the 2’s in the 2nd Round.

Yes make sure Wofford or Milwaukee escape the second round.

That way you can stand tall over your brackets,

When you tell your friends you called that upset.

And, with pride, show them your Final Four.

You know those Cinderella’s will surely win some games.

Of course UK sneaks in the Sweet Sixteen.

But think twice about UCLA in a Sweet Sixteen,

Wear and Wear, Anderson and Adams, might drop the second round.

Alford’s inconsistency costs Bruins ball games.

It also might be wise to enter several brackets,

Since when have you called a complete Final Four?

Always ruined by some unconsidered upset.

But whenever you’re in doubt, go with that upset,

Chalk never calls the Sweet Sixteen.

Chalk becomes your friend once you’re in the Final Four.

Have those Spartans making it in the opening rounds,

Izzo and Michigan are gimme picks in brackets,

Tournament basketball, those are their games.

But don’t take the Shockers to sweep their games,

Undefeated in a mid-major? Be ready for that upset,

Everyone else can’t ignore their record on their brackets.

For that matter, they won’t even make the Sweet Sixteen,

Take the UK Wildcats, surviving the third round,

Coach Cal’s Tweak will try to touch the Final Four.

But don’t have Kentucky inside your Final Four,

Fan biases always lead to incorrect games,

Like saying Louisville will drop the second round,

Or Mercer maybe dealing Duke, another early upset.

They’ll at least make the Sweet Sixteen.

Or else, a rampage will ensue upon my March Madness bracket.

To recap, have some upsets before your Final Four,

Don’t chalk games, until the Sweet Sixteen,

And maybe by the last round, you’ll still have a bracket.
