Had Many Sons Had Father Abraham
In biblical times, burning live animals was a sign of commitment to the Lord. To test Father Abraham's obedience, God ordered him to sacrifice his youth-aged son. He and his son traveled to the mount and began their journey up to the heavens. Part of the way up, little Isaac realized they didn't have an animal with them and asked his father where the sacrifice was. Abraham slyly responded that God would provide them with an animal. And then he did! Once God realized Abraham would actually go through with the sacrifice, he made an animal pop out of a nearby bush. Phew. Close call for Isaac. And then father Abraham went on to have many sons...had many sons had father Abraham.
As for modern day sacrifices, I think one of the highest ranking sacrifices is that which many members of the Armed Forces take. Now, I don't like war. I actually despise war. But I think it's a necessary evil for survival as a world power and many people fail to acknowledge the complexity of war when arguing for peace. Soldiers who choose to join the military knowing that may not always agree with the war make an immense sacrifice. For their term of service, they surrender personal opinion and security with the belief that they are fighting for a greater good. They must trust that (like God with Abraham) government leaders know what they are doing with foreign policy. They fight for those who those who support them and those who don't, because somebody has to do the ugly work. Many soldiers take on the motto "If not me, then who?". They realize if they don't make sacrifices, other Americans will have to.
