The story of Echo and Narcissus in Greek mythology is a very interesting one because it has an ending that truly demonstrates of a certain characteristic that we often struggle with. Echo was this beautiful woodland nymph who lived in the forest. Zeus was fond of Echo and therefore his wife, Hera, was not. As punishment towards her husband, and Echo for catching Zeus's eye, Hera takes away Echo's ability to speak freely. Now, Echo can only echo the words said to her. One day in the woods, where Narcissus hunted, Echo approached him and tried to talk with him. Narcissus immediately dismisses her and eventually she dies of a broken heart. Narcissus did this same thing to more than just this one nymph. As he hoped for a partner who would be beautiful and love him back, he found himself at a clear pond looking at a reflection of himself. There he was so taken by his own looks that he stayed there until death.
One narcissist I can think of from a fictional story is the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland, at least the way she is portrayed in the latest Alice in Wonderland movie. She is portrayed with an extremely large head and small body and she is always just thinking of herself. For example she feels everything and every hat can look nice on her etc. Overall, the Queen of Hearts is full of herself, very egotistical, and is not a character out of the story I would like to spend much time with.
