At the beginning of Gen. chap. 6, God limits the number of years a human can live (down to a whole 120 years!). Humans are so evil in everything they do and think that He decides to wipe out all of His creation--all the birds, and little mice, and humans. And then we meet Noah, who pleases God enough to be allowed to live.
God tells Noah to build a huge boat (giving him all the details he needs to make it exactly to His specifications) because He's going "to cover the earth with a flood that will destroy every living thing that breathes." (NLT Gen. 6:17) He also tells Noah to bring his wife and kids, along with two of every animal. And Noah does everything he is supposed to.
The rain falls down and floods the earth. God sends a wind to blow the floodwater away.
Telling time is really hard here.
Noah sends out a raven and a dove to look for dry land. The dove came back with no good news. Again he sends it out, and this time, the dove returns with an olive branch. On the third time, the dove does not return. Then God tells Noah to release all the animals from the boat so they may be fruitful and multiply. Noah takes the animals he brought with him for sacrifice and builds an altar for God. This sacrifice is pleasing to God, and He says He will never do anything like that flood ever again.
My favorite animals are cats and llamas. I have always loved cats, always, but had never been able to have one of my own until we moved to Lexington (10 years ago). My whole family is allergic to cats, but they put up with it. My cat, as you have seen in a previous blog post, is a fluffy thing. She, Pandora, loves to sleep outside my door at night to keep me safe. If I fall asleep on the couch, she will wake me up by eating my hair. She is the funniest little thing! I like llamas because they have beautiful eyelashes. I think any woman would want to have a llama's eyelashes. There are llamas at Aldersgate. One is named Martha, and she has a debilitating underbite. She has to be hand-fed. Last winter, I was able to hand-feed her, and it was such a sweet and heart-warming experience.
