There are plenty of funny lines in The Importance of Being Earnest. Most of the funny quotes are from
Algernon who has an irreverent satirical view on life. “The only way to behave
to a woman is to make love to her, if she is pretty, and to someone else, if
she is plain.” “I love hearing my relations abused. It is only thing that makes
me put up with them at all. Relations are simply a tedious pack of people, who
haven’t got the remotest knowledge of how to live, nor the smallest instinct about
when to die.” Quotes like these from Algernon show how oddly funny he is. Now,
Algernon is not the only source of Humor in the play. Lady Bracknell is
arrogant and that is what makes her funny. “Well, I must say, Algernon, that I
think it is high time that Mr. Branbuty made up his mind whether he was going
to live or to die.” How terrible to say such things! Lady Bracknell is entirely
serious in pulling out a notebook and interviewing and critiquing Jack/ Earnest
to see if he is worthy of marrying her daughter. “To lose one parent, Mr.
Worthing, may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both seems like
carelessness.” In both of these quotes, Lady Bracknell is saying preposterous
statements about situations that are not optional to other characters. People don’t
choose life or death nor do they choose to lose a parent. The humor of The Importance of Being Earnest stems
from the ridiculous nature of the quotes regarding social proceedings.
The lines that humor me in The Importance of Being Earnest are all arrogant dry statements about the social proceedings. The lines are in no means meant to be funny when said by the characters (of course they are by Wilde.) The humor comes from the ignorance in the statements.
I love comedies. But then again, who doesn't? One of my favorite comedians is Jeff Dunham. His ventriloquism is amazing. Many of his puppets have a tremendously crude humor. It's fantastic. Jeff does not critique society in his acts. Most of his humor is racist or something along those lines. It makes me laugh because... its simply funny there is no particular reason. Another great comedy is Dirty Rotten Scoundrels with Steve Martin. one cannot help but laugh at some one the stupidity in some of the scenes. Again, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is not critiquing society at all. If the movie critiques anything it is the manner of con artists.

*Viewer discretion advised for crude humor, a few curse words and racism.... I did pick one of the most appropriate videos..

To whom ever reads this: Sorry it is a little long and I may find humor is stupid things but hey its nice to simply relax and laugh!
