Closure - The Story So Far

First of all, thank you. I love music, thus I love posting blogs about music. This song is by one of my favorite bands currently: The Story So Far. They are a group of guys from a small town in California. Their song "Closure" is by far my favorite and is on their 1st full length album, "Under Soil and Dirt". The genre is described as "pop punk" meaning the "pop-ish" variant of the broader 'punk". The more mainstream vocals are what differentiates it from say a band like "the clash" which is just straight up punk. Unfortunately, the genre is by no means popular, and within the genre this band is small, so this could quite possibly be the FIRST and ONLY analysis of any song by this band EVER. ANYWAY, here we go: (please listen if you're reading, his voice and the way he sings are what make the song meaningful.)

Say what you need to say for the last time.
State all the premises figuring you’ll be just fine.
So I’ll get mine you get yours and if we’re both happy it's settled forevermore.
Holding the impression of a man when I was still a boy.
Said no regrets but it's hard not to feel any remorse.
I’m still debating whether I have even found the source.
Of all my discomfort and blunt discourse.

But I know what I want and don’t need what I get.
I invest my ideas but get swallowed in debt.
And the only release is to yell and to sweat.
Until my clothes are soaking wet.

Stay under my skin.
Tear me limb from limb.
Plague me to an end.
I can’t believe I always thought I would be there for you.
For now I’ll learn and settle for less.
Shut my eyes and get some rest.
Feel the pulse beneath this sunken chest.
And maybe one day I can be there for you.

Isn’t it true that if it hadn’t been for me you’d still have no place safe to fall.
And all this time I thought I knew.
When I had no idea at all.

All is fair in love and war.
You have your gifts some say they're poor.
But I don’t care about any of that anymore.
Let us depart and return when we have grown some more.
I wish I could say that I’ve seen this before.
The depth of the bottom the taste of the floor.
It's leaving me restless and tired and sore.
But you won’t break my mind just yet.

I battle this alone.

I don’t want to push you.
I just want to grieve.
I don’t want to push you.
I just want to leave.

SO, as one could conclude from the title of the song, the writer intends to provide some sort of closure to a problem that we can only assume is with a lady friend. It is unclear whether it's a break-up song or a "nice try, but no, talk to me later" song. My guess is the former. Whatever it is, it appears to be tearing this guy apart. Phrases like "stay under my skin, tear me limb from limb" lead me to believe that whoever this song is about is really getting to the writer. There are a couple devices used. There is a free verse rhyme scheme that comes in and out as it is needed. My personal favorite part is product of the rhythm and beat of "I wish I could say that I've seen this before. The depth of the bottom the taste of the floor." Along with the way it sounds, it provides great imagery that enables the audience to feel what the writer is feeling. Secondly, and idiom/allusion is used when he says "all is far in love and war". I'm uncertain of where it is from if it is an allusion, but it is definitely a reference to a common phrase that kind of sums up and validates the entire song.

Another thing I noticed is at the end, the final 5 lines all begin with "I", suggesting that this "closure" is really about him, not her. In fact, those lines are pretty tough to swallow "I don't want to push you, I just want to grieve, I don't want to push you, I just want to leave." Poor dude, just wants some space. But this was in 2011, so maybe it's been solved by then. We can only hope so.

Alright the Olympics are on, so I'm finished now.
